The Sunrise That Changed Everything: Adam's Peak Pilgrimage

At 2am, standing at the base of Adam's Peak in the pitch darkness, surrounded by pilgrims in white, the only thing visible is a string of lights climbing impossibly steeply into the sky. It looks like a stairway to the stars. In a way, it is.

The Night Climb

The pilgrimage season runs from December to May, and during this time, the entire 5,500-step trail is illuminated by electric lights. It transforms what would be a terrifying night hike into something almost magical — a river of humanity flowing upward in the darkness, united in the simple goal of reaching the top before dawn.

The first 2,000 steps pass relatively quickly, buoyed by adrenaline and the excitement of the experience. Tea shops appear every 500 steps or so, offering hot sweet tea for 50 cents — the best tea you'll ever taste, made extraordinary by exhaustion and altitude.
