Overview
Sigiriya, the "Lion Rock," is Sri Lanka's most iconic archaeological wonder — a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters high, topped with the ruins of an ancient palace built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD. This UNESCO World Heritage Site combines breathtaking natural beauty with extraordinary human engineering.
The ascent involves climbing approximately 1,200 steps, passing through the famous frescoes of the Sigiriya maidens, the mirror wall with ancient graffiti, and the enormous lion's paw gateway that gives the rock its name. The summit reveals the foundations of the royal palace, gardens, and pools — all at a dizzying height above the surrounding jungle.
The surrounding landscape includes some of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning, with elaborate gardens, reservoirs, and fortifications that demonstrate the sophisticated civilization that once thrived here.
