Overview
Ella Rock stands as one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding hikes, offering a challenging but deeply satisfying trail through tea plantations, railway tracks, and dense jungle. The summit reveals a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the surrounding hill country, with emerald tea estates stretching as far as the eye can see.
The trail begins near Ella town and follows the iconic railway tracks before veering off into the plantation paths. Navigation can be tricky without a guide, as the trail isn't well-marked in several sections. The final ascent is steep and requires some scrambling over rocks, but the view from the top makes every step worthwhile.
Best attempted in the early morning hours to avoid the midday heat and afternoon clouds that can obscure the views. The sunrise from the summit is particularly spectacular, painting the tea-covered hills in golden light.
“A challenging hike rewarded with panoramic tea plantation views across Sri Lanka's stunning hill country.”
